OVERVIEW

This project explores how culturally embedded, holistic health practices can be translated into computationally tractable formulation systems without erasing their contextual logic. Developed in collaboration with a women’s holistic health centre, the work focuses on structuring traditional ingredient knowledge, usage patterns, and practitioner heuristics into models that support systematic analysis, comparison, and optimisation. Rather than abstracting away tradition, the system is designed to preserve cultural structure while enabling modern analytical workflows.

ROLE

We worked with practitioners to formalise ingredient selection logic, preparation constraints, and combinatorial reasoning used in holistic formulation practices. This involved encoding culturally informed decision rules, historical usage contexts, and practical trade-offs into structured representations that could be evaluated and iterated computationally. The collaboration grounded system design in lived practice rather than hypothetical assumptions.

SERVICES

We developed formulation models and evaluation pipelines that operate over interacting ingredients, variable ratios, and contextual constraints. The system supports comparative analysis of ingredient combinations, assessment of functional trade-offs, and iterative refinement informed by both traditional practice and contemporary scientific signals. Emphasis was placed on interpretability and traceability rather than black-box optimisation.

About the project

This project functions as a concrete instantiation of a broader approach to computational health systems grounded in traditional knowledge. It demonstrates how holistic practices, often transmitted through culture, apprenticeship, and long-term use, can be made legible to analytical systems without reducing them to isolated components. While developed around a specific collaboration, the underlying approach is applicable to other culturally rooted health domains where complexity, interaction, and context matter.
